I'm not a stay-at-home mom, I just play one on TV - Fyreside Newsletter - 8/25/25

Fyreside Newsletter - 8/25/25

Hey Reader,

Last week's newsletter featured an example of my social media profile audit. If you missed that, you can check it out here. After sending that newsletter, I posted a tiktok offering to do the same audit for folks on that platform. Well, thanks to my new friend Megan, I can now add "stay-at-home-moms" to the list of people I've helped with their social presence!

First, a video!

Replying to @m3ganm0 here are a few things that I think will be really helpful! overall, your profile looks solid! the biggest thing I would focus on is developing a consistent thumbnail style. . . . #contentmarketing #socialmediastrategy #digitalmarketinghelp #smallbusinessmarketing #sahmtok

What I knew

As noted in the subject line, I am not a SAHM, or stay-at-home-mom for those unfamiliar with the acronym. I do work from home and I am a cat-dad, so while I acknowledge those two things aren't the same, they're close enough for jazz. Either way, I took a step back and asked myself, "What does a SAHM want from a tiktok?"

Well, if it were me, which I acknowledge that it isn't, BUT IF IT WERE, I'd want content that understand my unique experience. I would also want that content to respect that unique experience. SAHMs are multifaceted, hard workers with too much on their plate already, so they deserve content that addresses their spectrum of needs that is straightforward and doesn't waste the little time they have to scroll.

Long story short, if a SAHM has a moment to watch a tiktok, that tiktok needs to go down and easy.

What I found

When I first checked out Megan's profile, I noticed one thing right away. Megan creates content for SAHMs about products she thinks are perfect for them. She had done a great job explaining who she was, but hadn't quite showcased why someone should follow or engage with her content. Her bio was really strong, but unfortunately, most of the people who see your tiktok will never see your bio.

The next thing I did was scroll through Megan's grid. In her initial message to me, Megan noted that her growth had stalled and she wasn't sure why. Going back to the "why someone should follow" point, Megan's grid didn't have any video thumbnails. That means anyone who did make it to her profile had no way of knowing what a video was about without watching it. Some people might say, "but that's good because it drives views!" Those people are dumb and wrong. Remember what I said about SAHMs having limited time? If Brittany the SAHM came across one of Megan's videos on her feed and wanted to go back and reference it later, do you think she'd be excited to watch every video to find the one she's looking for?

Finally, I watched about a dozen or so of Megan's videos. Her personality and editing really stood out! Look, being an influencer is hard and consistently getting in front of a camera is no joke. If you're the type of person who can thrive in that space, it should be celebrated! The best way to capitalize on a solid personality and decent editing is to make sure the right people see it. On each of those dozen or so videos, I reviewed the hashtags Megan used. Optimizing hashtags requires a subtle nuance, but picking the right ones can go a long way.

What I advised

  • Issue: How can we emphasize why someone should follow?
  • Solution: Adjust the profile name to include more information. When I met Megan, her profile name was "Megan | SAHM" and I suggested that she add a phrase like "Must Haves." That emphasizes her brand image on her videos and negates the need for someone to go to her profile to find the why.

  • Issue: Not having a consistent thumbnail style makes it difficult for people to consume content efficiently from your grid.
  • Solution: Easy, start making thumbnails.

  • Issue: Hashtags are hard but they're good for you.
  • Solution: TikTok has recently instituted a 5 hashtag limit on some accounts. Because of this, it's incredibly important not to waste one of those 5 slots. I pointed out to Megan that she occasionally doubled up on hashtags, using things like #SAHM and #StayAtHomeMom on one post. Eliminating those redundancies will naturally lead to better hashtag usage.

Why I'm telling you

Let's be honest with ourselves, you probably need this too. There is a reason that authors have editors; catching your own mistakes is difficult. It does not matter to me if you are a small business, a solo entrepreneur, a nonprofit or a SAHM microinfluencer.

I can help you. I promise.

Fyreside Newsletter - 11/3/25 Hey Reader, Thank you. If you're reading this newsletter, you have been an integral part of the first year of Bahnfyre PR. I am forever grateful and, from the bottom of my blackened, anxiety-ridden heart, thank you. Starting a business has been the second most humbling experience of my life. First place is steadily held by a time in 9th grade when I asked a dancer named Marissa if she wanted to be my girlfriend. She said no. I did not expect that. Speaking of...

Fyreside Newsletter - 10/28*/25 Hey Reader, A happy Tuesday to you! I was traveling this weekend and took yesterday off. Please know that, as I firmly believe everyone should, I didn't do anything work related yesterday. When you take a day off, don't "just do this one thing." Then it's not a day off. If you missed seeing this newsletter in your inbox yesterday, I appreciate your commitment, but I don't apologize for the inconvenience. Now, while I was traveling, I encountered one of the best...

Fyreside Newsletter - 10/20/25 Hey Reader, Some housekeeping up front: I forgot to change the date on last week's newsletter. Apologies for any confusion. Yes, the headers are a different color! Glad you noticed. Do you like them? With that out of the way, today's newsletter is an important reminder: Social Media is a game and we're all just players. In most games, the rules are preestablished and widely known. When rules in a game change, there's typically a great deal of discussion and...
