Just a rant about the TikTok ban. - Fyreside Newsletter - 1/13/25

Fyreside Newsletter - 1/13/25

Hey Reader,

Allow me to kick in the door to your inbox at 3pm on a Monday.

Have a video.

Have a transcript.

I don't know, have you ever just come back from vacation more stressed than before you left? Does that ever happen to you? Has that ever happened to you?

I'm talking about the TikTok ban, because everybody's talking about the TikTok ban. That's just like, what we're doing today?

I've said in other videos that I don't think the TikTok ban will go through. I still kind of feel that way. I think some sale or monetary solution comes out of this before the app actually gets banned in the us because that's a massive amount of the user base... whatever.

What I'm bumming about or what's bring me down today is just like... the f**kin' vibe, man.

And it's bringing me down because TikTok has been a really fun platform and honestly it's been good for creativity in social media. I mean, it really did for short form content what Vine wasn't able to do.

And yeah, quite frankly, I've put a lot of effort into trying to build up a present on this app because, quite frankly, I think it's worth it for me and the business that I'm trying to start and the services that I want to offer and [blegh.]

So yeah, I don't think the app will get banned but even if it does, or if it does, like oh man, what a f**kin' bummer. Can we just have one thing on the internet that's good? Please?

And I am by no means calling TikTok a perfect platform, or even social media inherently good, or the internet inherently good but, come on. This app has done for the creator economy what nothing else has been able to do since Google bought YouTube. And it just sucks that there's potential for it all to go away. So yeah, I'm bummed.

All of that said, the internet will keep turning and we'll find a new place to go. Maybe it'll be Instagram, maybe it'll be YouTube, maybe it'll be something that doesn't even exist yet. But the internet will keep turning and the creator economy will continue to exist with or without TikTok and there will be worth to social media marketing with or without TikTok. Yeah, absolutely.

Fyreside Newsletter - 1/20/25 Hey Reader, First off, happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! I hope you have the day off and I hope it's inspiring you to think critically about the society in which we live and the ways we, as individuals, can change it. I'd like to share with you the lyrics of a song called Pretty Songs by this punk band I like called Bob Vylan. White folks love quoting Martin Luther'Cause he held hands and prayed while they bombed his buildingGood for him but the times have...

Fyreside Newsletter - 1/6/25 Hey Reader, Do you remember seven days ago? Seven days ago was the 30th of December for those of you who don't have your calendar app on speed dial. There's a huge difference between December 30th and January 6th: expectation. (No, this isn't a joke about historical events that happened on January 6th, but I see you.) New Year, New Expectations The first five days of 2025 came with an excuse. You drop a national holiday on a Wednesday and you've effectively...

Fyreside Newsletter - 12/30/24 Hey Reader, Zoom out with me for a second, what the hell are we supposed to be doing right now? Seriously, the seven days between 12/25 and 1/2 feel like the most lawless days of the year. To me, week 52 of every year is akin to an airport terminal. There are barely any rules and the only expectation is that you get out of it. Want a beer at 6 am? You go for it. Want to go unjudged for napping in public? Hell yeah, get after it. Are you crying? That's ok, most...
